The
Propylaea consists of the four remaining pillars at the entrance to Baalbeck,
all that is left of the series of columns that supported the portico or
covered entryway to the temple complex. Inscribed at the base of these
pillars is the phrase "For the safety and victories of our Lord Caracalla."
It was under Caracalla's reign that the Roman version of the temple complex
was completed. Baalbeck itself was incorporated into the Roman Empire in
64 A.D. by Pompey, then a general in the Roman army.
