Inscribed at the base of these pillars is the phrase "For the safety and victories of our Lord Caracalla." It was under Caracalla's reign that the Roman version of the temple complex was completed. Baalbeck itself was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 64 A.D. by Pompey, then a general in the Roman army.
