Bagan, an 80 minute domestic flight south from Yangon, is located on the broad river plain of the Ayrewaddy River (Irawaddy when I took geography). It is certainly one of the relatively unsung archeological treasures of the world. On this plain can be found more than 2,200 stupas (Buddhist shrines) and pahtos (temples) stretching as far as the eye can see. From our home base at the Thiripyitsaya Hotel, located on the banks of the Ayrewaddy, we explored some of the more prominent architectural monuments from the great era of the temple builders.
