Galle Market
Another interesting destination in
Galle is the market. It is a wonderful third-world experience--tiny
little stalls bursting with fresh produce, meat and fish. It is an
all-encompassing experience, a melange of sights, sounds and smells.
The photo to the left shows one of the small spice stalls, with chilis,
saffron, and cumin; we purchased some saffron and freshly-ground
cinnamon. On the other side of the street was a block-length fish
market, offering all variety of local fish. The photo to the left shows
the wet table, full of tuna, swordfish, gar and snapper. The photo at
the bottom left shows one of the fish
sellers showing the row of fine teeth on one of the gar. Below the fish
market are the butchers, also selling their product out of doors, using
ice rather than refrigeration (I hope that the Lighthouse doesn't shop
here--or at least that they shop early). On the day we
visited, several
nuns were at the butcher, bargaining for the cuts they wanted. Meat must be habit-forming! A real
slice of local life.
